Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is the main festivity in China. Lunar New Year is also called Chinese New Year or Spring Festival.

Traditionally, celebrations last for fifteen days, ending on the date of the full moon, when it is at its brightest.

People clean their houses to sweep away any bad luck. They then put away all brooms, dustpan and brushes so that the good luck can’t be swept away.

Fireworks are fired to frighten away evil spirits. People dress head to foot in new red clothing, to scare the bad away.

Lion and dragon dances are common during the Lunar New Year and it is believed that the loud drumming and clashing of cymbals will chase away bad luck and evil spirits.
