Part 1: Reading The Royals and their horses
The Royals and their horses
The Royal Family of the United Kingdom has always loved animals. They were famous for their dogs, but also for their horses. Horses were important for the royals during history. Kings and queens rode horses in ceremonies, in parades and sometimes in wars.
Queen Elizabeth II became the queen in 1952. She was only twenty-five years old when her father died. Her father became king in 1936, after his brother stepped down from the throne. Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret grew up in London. During her childhood she loved animals very much. She received her first horse when she was only four years old. The little pony was called Peggy.
Later she got many other horses. One of her most famous horses was Burmese. The queen rode Burmese during the ceremony of crowning in Canada and in many parades in London.
The queen’s husband, Prince Philip, also loved horses. The pair often watched races together. The queen officially opened the famous Royal Ascot every year.
